Livebearers

Breeding aquarium fish that are livebearers

The aquarium fish group of livebearers consists mainly of Mollies, Platys, Guppies and Swordtails. There are few other fish types in this group but these are the most popular ones. Livebearers are hardy and good starting fish. My only caution to a new aquarist is that the male can sometimes be a dominant male. To avoid one male picking on another a good idea is to have just one male and several females.

These fish give birth to live baby fish and are easy to breed. The only bad thing is the tendency that the female has towards being cannibalistic. To help an aquarist save the baby fish from the mother there are commercially made breeding traps that isolate the baby fish away from the mom at birth.
